Research

  • Spectroscopy: Photographic and photometric experimental methods from VUV to IR, particularly plasma spectroscopy; laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy; and laser optogalvanic spectroscopy.

  • Lasers:  Laser sustained plasmas, both theoretical and experimental; laser-target interactions, primarily experimental; infrared laser photo-chemistry and isotope separation, both theoretical and experimental.

  • Plasmas:  Plasma opening switches, cable guns, railgun plasma armatures, electrodeless plasmas, laser sustained plasmas; laser discharges; arc-jets and ion engines.

  • Fluid Mechanics: MHD computational simulations, theoretical modeling of flows in laser sustained plasmas, electrodeless arcs and arcjets, flows of rarefied gases, flows in railgun plasma armatures, theoretical analysis of boundary layer flows in electrodeless arcs; propagation of laser supported combustion waves; theoretical modeling of gun muzzle blasts; modeling of room response to blast waves; experimental determination of atmospheric pressure waves associated with solar eclipse.
