Intro

I was born in Johannesburg (South Africa) and grew up in Madeira Island (Portugal). In 1998 I graduated in Physics at Instituto Superior Tecnico (Lisbon - Portugal). I expect to receive a PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa, after defending a dissertation on “Laser powder deposition: process simulation by finite element analysis”.

Academic Background

  • Doctoral degree: thesis to be submitted at Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa, Portugal.
Subject: Laser powder deposition: process simulation by finite element analysis.
  • Five year degree in Physics Engineering; October 1998; Instituto Superior Técnico. Lisboa. Portugal.

Research Background

  • Research Associate, October 2005 – Present. Center for Laser Applications, University of Tennessee Space Institute.
    Research field: laser materials processing.
2005-2006: During this period, my work involved the development of the Laser Induced Surface Improvement (LISI) process for military and commercial applications, including LISI-type data matrix marks and wear and corrosion resistant surface coatings on metal surfaces. I also implemented a finite element heat transfer model (FEM) of the LISI process using the ABAQUS FEM software package, tested on the TiC-Al material system.
2006-2007: Currently, I am working on the development of LISI-type wear resistant coatings capable of withstanding highly abrasive environments, on in-situ synthesis of nano size WC, laser consolidation of novel cermet and glass-metal powders, and optimization of the ebf3 solid freeform fabrication process being developed at NASA.
