Particulate Studies
During the past year, CLA concluded its sub-contractual work for ERC, Inc.
for the development of a particulate monitor for turbine engines. A favorable
evaluation resulted for the proposal that was submitted for the continuation of
this Navy-sponsored program, but money for its support was diverted to other
Navy program elements. CLA
laboratory and theoretical studies of diffusion-broadening spectroscopy have
continued in this area to enhance the capabilities for the characterization of
particles smaller than approximately 10 nanometers. The EPA- proposed
environmental regulations concerning "fine particles" that are currently
before Congress are expected to impact favorably the CLA particulate research
program. The previous and current research results provide capabilities for the
Center to perform particulate monitoring and research studies in support of
these EPA activities.
